A decisive entrance by the performers is announced with the shout: “Congo kaka boye” (This is Congo). The choreographic work by Gervais Tomadiatunga bursts open explosively, transforming the wounds and traumas of his childhood into creativity, resilience, and hope. Drawing on his experience as a former child soldier and coltan miner, Gervais brings to life characters who embody the struggles and victories of Congolese youth facing socio-economic and environmental challenges. On stage, the performers represent a generation searching for its way amidst alcohol, religion, sex, confusion, and disillusionment. They carry with them a rage for life, a vital need to create. The captivating music accompanies them in this relentless search, uniting their bodies in a collective struggle. Individualities persist, but their bodies coexist with a shared emotion and vibration. The dance unites them, transforming them into a collective body—courageous, proud, tireless—that carries within it the joys and pains of everyday life. The performance tackles urgent issues such as power outages, water scarcity, and pollution, placing the fundamental role of women in Congolese society at the forefront. With four dancers on stage and sets created from recycled materials, this creation is both a cry for social justice and a celebration of freedom through movement.

DANSEINCOLORE. Founded by choreographer and dancer Gervais Tomadiatunga, the company stands out for its approach to dance that places freedom at the center of its choreographic work. Its dancers are freed from the constraints of traditional Western styles to reclaim their bodies and rediscover a coherent expressive language. With bases in France and Congo, the company reinterprets African rhythms and dances, celebrating the richness of the African expressive heritage and the vitality of the applause, rivers, and forests of Congo. Works like Réalité(s), Mboka Mboka, and Congo Ka Boyé explore Tomadiatunga’s personal experiences, marked by civil war, struggle, and trauma, enriching the daily lives of urban centers with examples of resistance and creativity.

GERVAIS TOMADIATUNGA. Director of the TOKOMI Biennale in Brazzaville, Franco-Congolese choreographer and dancer, he began his career in 2004 with the National Ballet and National Theatre of Congo. A former child soldier, he uses dance as a medium to tell his story and offer hope. Since then, he has toured across Africa, Europe, and the United States. His works explore the traumas and dynamics of Congolese childhood. He is the founder of the Koundi Dance School in Brazzaville, where he is gaining recognition for nurturing a new generation of dancers. In 2024, he won the Oslo Award for his solo performance “Espoir de survie.”
