Absent Flowers is inspired by the eponymous cycle of works from the 1990s by scenographer and artist Albano Morandi, dedicated to the concept of emergence and latency of the image. The theme of presence/absence (the negative) becomes the recurring element of the performance. A physical artwork, created specifically by Morandi, defines the performance space and becomes a co-protagonist of the action. In this case, Morandi transcends the concept of “superstructure”, freeing himself from canonical forms in favour of slender, elongated figures capable of carving out spaces within their environment. Similarly, the performers’ movements seek expression through an exploration of shapes, reinterpreted in a choreographic continuum that constructs and subtracts, elaborates and deconstructs, modifies and adapts the language in real time. Like Morandi’s artwork, the bodies lend themselves to becoming “sculptural forms” in a kind of counter-dance that unfolds through small details, harmonious gestures in space, and moments of rhythmic dissonance. The visual and choreographic elements are further enriched by the original music of renowned Italo-Swedish composer Timoteo Carbone, internationally recognised for his contributions to installations and performances featured in museums and institutions such as Stedelijk Museum, Gaudeamus Muziekfestival, Boijmans Museum, Van Abbemuseum, Tempo Reale, Rewire Festival, and Fabbrica Europa. With Absent Flowers, dance, music, and visual art come together to explore new and stimulating expressive contaminations.

YOY PERFORMING ARTS. Founded in 2021 by Emma Zani, Roberto Doveri, and Timoteo Carbone, It is a project that merges dance, music, and visual art in search of cross-pollination and new expressive forms. It is a cultural entity with a shared goal: to exchange ideas. YoY’s creations have been showcased at prestigious national and international festivals, receiving recognition from institutions such as Anghiari Dance Hub 2022, Crossing the Sea, and Danza Urbana. Among its most recent successes, the project INESORABILMENTEUNAVIA led the company to be selected for the Vetrina della giovane danza d’autore eXtra 2023 and to win the Prospettiva Danza Teatro Award 2023, as well as securing second prize with special mention at the ICC Linkage competition in Bulgaria. Over the years, YoY has gained significant recognition, from winning a grant for the cultural enhancement of the Royal Palace of Caserta to composing music and choreography for a documentary film produced by LVMH/Masoni. In 2023, the company curated the choreography for the opera Song of the Dark Forest for the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam and was selected for the Prove d’Autore 2023 project. In 2024, YoY won the ACASA grant from Scenario Pubblico – Compagnia Zappalà Danza for a two-year residency programme and was among the finalists of DNAppunti Coreografici 2024 and Twain Direzioni Altre 2024.
