Theme - Transformation / Deconstruction

Largo Corso Palermo / Via Sesia BARRIERA DI MILANO

Selected for Redescena 2024 and MASDANZA 2024, co-produced by the Canal Choreographic Center, Mascherin’s choreography enters into symbiosis with the live electronic music of sound artist Alejandro Da Rocha and fascinatingly explores the vulnerability of the body and the inevitability of falling. Not only a powerful and immersive journey that dissolves the boundaries between body, sound, and space, but also an exhibition of a long theoretical and conceptual research. After various collaborations with prominent companies such as Sharon Fridman and La Veronal, in the movement that becomes a gentle obsession, the choreographer adopts the theme of falling, the impact that generates vulnerability, and the body’s surrender to falling for pure pleasure. Mascherin thus welcomes the audience while holding a glass, stretching his neck, and extending his hand forward. The spectator watches. In an instant, the glass shatters into a thousand pieces on Mascherin’s head, and the performer collapses, stunned. Someone in the audience jumps up in shock, but the performance is not interrupted; it’s only just beginning. This is Mascherin’s way of performing the void—not one that wears down, but one that overturns, speaks openly, and helps to rediscover and satisfy oneself during free fall.

RICHARD MASCHERIN. A creator from the Canary Islands, Mascherin specializes in contemporary performing arts and audiovisuals. He graduated in Contemporary Dance in Madrid and has developed expertise in General Cinematic Directing and Stunt for Film and TV. As a dancer, he has collaborated with notable companies such as Sharon Fridman and La Veronal. Since 2015, the concept of falling has been a recurring theme in his career as a performer. He currently directs a project that explores the inevitability of falling through various scenic and artistic forms, integrating dance, performance, video, and photography. Some of his most significant works include CAER, CAER, CAER (Fall, Fall, Fall), which won second place for Best Solo Performance at the Masdanza International Competition, VACÍO ESPIRITUAL (Spiritual Void), and HE AQUÍ UN ACTO ROMÁNTICO (Here is a Romantic Act), co-produced by the Canal Choreographic Center. His work has been recognized with artistic residencies and programming in Bulgaria, the Canary Islands, Hong Kong, and Macao. Expanding his research into the audiovisual field, he co-directed the short film HE AQUÍ UN CUERPO QUE CAE (Here is a Body That Falls) with visual artist Sam Fuentes. The film has been presented in artistic spaces and film festivals such as Trastevere Cosmo (Italy), Márgenes Madrid International Film Festival, and the San Sebastián Musical Documentary Film Festival.
