After the success of Femina, a finalist at the 2023 Ubu Award in the “Best Dance Show” category, Viro takes the stage, dedicated to the male counterpart. A character in the head, two dancers on stage. Equal, opposite mirrors that confront each other. Two who are: a bit grown-up boys and a bit men who don’t know how to give up eternal youth. Liquid, feminine, self-indulgent in their depression, males. Contemporary males? They certainly belong to the genre of male ostentation without breath and spirit, inessential and empty. Minimalism, dim lights expose the male in a choreographic form. Gray hair and ambiguous clothes dress him.

Stereotypes and clichés strip him before the spectator’s eyes. The man is Viro, a bifronted, broken, and melancholic creature. The choreography is accompanied by Olaf Bender, aka Byetone, with “Death of a Typographer”. Techno sounds, imperative and radical rhythms but still “human”, fluid, close to the body’s flows, capable of generating emotions. Thus Abbondanza/Bertoni capture the modern male: wounded, centaur, accepted and recognized only when he asserts himself in his intrinsic and splendid banality. Among the unmissable events of the 2025 season, Viro is certainly one of the most important.

ABBONDANZA BERTONI.  Michele Abbondanza, co-founder of the Sosta Palmizi group and teacher at the Piccolo Theatre School of Milan, and Antonella Bertoni founded the Abbondanza/Bertoni Company in the early ’90s, recognized as one of the most prolific artistic realities in the Italian scene, for its educational and pedagogical activity and for the diffusion of contemporary dance theatre. Their choreographic research comes from various training experiences, from those with Alwin Nikolais to studies with Dominique Dupuy, through work with Carolyn Carlson and the practice of Zen. They won the Danza&Danza Award “Best Performers”, the Cascina Prize for choreography, and the ETI-Stregagatto Award with the show Romanzo d’infanzia, which has surpassed 600 performances in four versions (Italian, English, French, Portuguese), the Danza&Danza 2017 Award for La morte e la fanciulla as the best Italian production of the year, the Aquila Award for Culture 2019. In 2021, they won the UBU Award with Doppelgänger as the Best Dance Show 2020/2021. In 2008, Scuola d’Azione was born, a theoretical and physical space for transmitting their teaching, at the Teatro alla Cartiera in Rovereto, Trento, where the company has been in residence since 2005 and where they practice and teach Zen, an element that characterizes their works.
